Description
Our Part 3 workshop, Before the Fault, is a 90 minute live session on Zoom for PDIs who want to understand exactly how the examiner marks risk, adaptation and directions. If you’ve had a Part 3 result that didn’t match how you felt the lesson went, this session will show you why.
Why we created this Part 3 workshop
We see the same pattern again and again. A pupil makes a mistake on a Part 3. The PDI stops, adapts the lesson and gives a remedy. The examiner then says the adaptation wasn’t needed, and the PDI is left confused.
Directions are another common one. The PDI feels their directions were clear, but the mark comes back as a 1.
In most cases the real problem happened earlier. The fault was allowed to happen. If the risk had been managed, there would have been nothing to adapt, and the score would have looked very different.
What the Part 3 workshop covers
We use a real Part 3 result as a case study, so everything is practical and grounded in what examiners actually look for.
How Part 3 is marked
You’ll see how the 17 competencies are scored and why risk management decides your result. Score 7 or less out of 15 in risk management and it’s a fail, whatever your total.
Managing risk before the fault
We break down two real incidents: a pupil failing to stop at a zebra crossing, and a pupil turning right across an oncoming vehicle near a blind bend. You’ll learn how to spot the risk early, check the pupil has seen it, prompt in good time and step in when needed.
Adapt or carry on?
Not every mistake needs a lesson adaptation. We give you a simple three question test to decide in the moment whether a mistake is a one-off misjudgement or a real learning need.
Directions and instructions
This competency sits in risk management, and it covers safety instructions as well as route directions. You’ll learn what earns a 3 and what drops you to a 1.
Practice scenarios
In breakout rooms, you’ll work through real scenarios and decide what the trainer should do before, during and after each one.
Who this Part 3 workshop is for
This session is for PDIs preparing for their first attempt, and PDIs who have had a fail and want to understand their feedback. ADIs preparing for a Standards Check will also benefit, as the same risk management competencies apply.
What you get
You get 90 minutes of live, interactive training with an experienced trainer, a short case study to read before the session, and a takeaway sheet to keep in the car for your next lesson.
Date, time and how it works

After booking, you’ll receive your Zoom link and pre-session reading by email two days before the workshop. Please join on a laptop or tablet with your camera on, as we’ll be using breakout rooms.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Part 3 workshop recorded?
No. It’s a live session with polls, discussion and breakout rooms, so you’ll get the most from it by attending on the night.
Do I need to prepare anything?
Just read the short case study we send you and note down one thing you think the PDI did wrong. We’ll use it in the first ten minutes.
Where can I find the official Part 3 guidance?
The DVSA sets out the test format on the official ADI Part 3 test page. This Part 3 workshop builds on that guidance and shows you how it applies on a real lesson.
